Adkins first African American president at Fairmont boarding school
Mar Wed 18th, 2009 by outsourcing
For the 160th year history of Fairmont boarding school, it would be first time to note that the school will have its first African American woman president in the person of Autumn Adkins. The news is wonderful since having the first ever black woman president of the school is really one of a kind.
At first, it was only a dream for Adkins that she wanted to run a boarding school for less fortunate students. But now her dream seems to go nearer to realization – with her becoming the first president of Fairmont boarding school.
She was an assistant principal at a Quaker school prior to her new appointment. In fact, many of her contemporaries are saying that Adkins installation as the first black woman president of Fairmont was really private school’s breakthrough. The Girard College is set to announce Adkins’ installation. In July, the report said, Adkins will arrive at Girard’s 43-acre campus to take charge of said school. The school has only 669 students enrolled from first to 12th grade it was learned. Many of the students came from single parent households and this is also what interests Adkins having dreamt of this kind of school for the less in life.
In fact, the good news about the school is that it provides college preparatory program and this is free career planning program. For the selection process, qualifiers are chosen based on recommendations, interviews, and school records. According to report, Southeastern Pennsylvania has the most number of students who qualify. Just like in a military boarding school, some students also want to benefit from free education programs.
Adkins was the unanimous choice to replace Dominic Cermele because of her interesting experience as a teacher in private schools as well as an administrator. Girard officials decides to replace Cermele because he was retiring from service, it was also learned. Cermele’s decision to retire in June is to coincide with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Cermele’s graduation in said school.
