Understanding single sex boarding schools
Jan Thu 22nd, 2009 by outsourcing
There are now many people that are doubtful whether a single sex boarding school education is effective or not. For those who’ve been there the single sex education helps them open to many possibilities in life as well as improve their career orientation in a much better perspective.
There are researches that say all girls schools are better environment rather than co-ed format schools. Carol Gilligan of the Harvard University said girls are psychologically unique.
Author Cornelius Riordan also observed that in terms of education, an all girl school is much better. Riordan said for the past two years he had successfully conducted research in co-ed schools as well as in boarding school settings.
Dr. Ken Rowe of Australia said the girls in single sex schools, based on his research, are performing better than girls in traditional schools of mixed students. This means they learn more knowledge from the class as compared to other girls that are not enrolled in boarding schools.
Rowe also observed that the girls in co-ed schools are only limited in their capacities as far as social and development growth. The girls that were included in his research were those having the ages between 12 and 16. During their adolescent years it is also suggested that girls in boarding schools can better accommodate the needs of students most especially in specific developments.
For her part, Dr. Rosemary Salomone of the St. John’s University said the all girls setting seems to provide girls with additional ways to finally gain confidence. This is because they become more confident and they’re no longer audience during school activities but they are performers, leaders and doer of their own plans. This is a good sign that they have become independent-minded in the school. If this is the case, the girls would eventually become independent-minded as far as their decisions are concerned as well as they can now decide on their own as leaders in schools. Though this is great new sin many schools in the US but not in other schools world wide since boarding school is not really known especially in third world countries.
