Understanding Indian boarding schools
Jan Fri 23rd, 2009 by outsourcing
People who were born in the 20th century may not thoroughly understand all about the Indian boarding schools and this article we would try to let you understand this fact because Indian boarding schools are the oldest boarding schools in the United States. It started in the late 19th century and its main purpose is to educate Native Americans.
When this type of school started it was run by missionaries. There were documents which showed school children during this time were forbidden to use and speak their own language except the English language.
It was also during this period the Native Americans were taught Christianity instead of their own religion and they were also forced to abandon their identities as Indians and instead adopt the life of European-American culture. There was too much of a history about the origin of Indian boarding schools and all these facts were not known in many schools world wide.
The worst cases recorded during this period of Indian boarding schools were physical, sexual and mental abuses that occurred in the schools. Well, it’s so sad to think of all these past history of a boarding school but it also reminded us that a boarding school has already existed in the 19th century but only that the goals and objectives of having this type of education is not clearly defined yet. Many students were abused and refused of their rights to proper education.
The Indian boarding schools also opened more avenues for learning because it’s where the boarding school education started, developed, and finally carried out into what it is now.
In fact, the Indian boarding schools in the first half of the 20th century had already doubled in attendance, especially in the 1960. In 1970 the Indian boarding schools has reached its highest enrollment. In 1973, there were already a total of 60,000 enrollees that were recorded. This means people in America as well as the educators have continually developed a system of education in America that would be perfected as far as giving quality education to the school children.
